Local Laws & Customs for travelers

Sri Lanka is a friendly and welcoming country, but respecting local laws and customs is essential to ensure a smooth and enjoyable trip.

Here are the key rules every tourist should be aware of:

  • Respect all religions

Always show respect towards all religions and religious locations.

Dress modestly whenever visiting religious places and ensure to cover any tattoos that may not reflect respectful towards any religion at all public places.

Remove shoes and hats before entering any religious sites.

  • Smoking, consumption of Alcohol and use of Drugs

Smoking and Drinking is banned in public places unless otherwise designated for the same.

Possession of drugs or trafficking will result in severe penalties including jail time.

(Alcohol will not be sold or made available on Full Moon Poya Days legally anywhere in the country.

  • Driving in Sri Lanka

Ensure you carry a valid International Driving Permit (IDP).

Seatbelts and Helmets for bikes are compulsory, will result in fines if not followed accordingly.

Practice extreme caution when driving Tuk Tuks for travelers who may have not driven Tuks before for your own safety.

  • Photography

Always pay attention and avoid photographing restricted spaces as mentioned in the locations, including but not limited to Military sites, Government buildings or other places marked as High Security Zones.

Request permission before recording or photographing any particular person or private locations in general.

  • Environment and Wildlife

Refrain from removing to taking away shells, corals and plants from their usual habitats.

Avoid touching or feeding any wild animals for your own safety. Only to proceed in specific locations that are manned with trained wildlife officials who have approved and will supervise on the above.

  • Public Display of Affection (PDA)

Avoid any strong PDA as it is frowned upon. Holding hands, hugging and other mild display of affection is considered accepted as per public norms.

  • General

Always ensure to carry a copy of your passport and visa (ETA) with you at all times.

Do not overstay your Visa, please extend as per your requirement as it could result in fines and legal action.
