Located primarily in the Hambantota District (with parts extending into the Monaragala District) within the Southern and Uva Provinces, Yala National Park is the country’s most visited and celebrated national park.

Yala offers a remarkable blend of landscapes—from dry forests and open grasslands to lagoons and coastal stretches—creating the perfect habitat for a wide range of wildlife. It is globally renowned for having one of the highest densities of leopards in the world, making it one of the best places to spot these elusive big cats in their natural environment.

Beyond leopards, the park is home to elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles, deer, and over 200 species of birds, making it a paradise for wildlife enthusiasts and photographers. Safaris are conducted in 4x4 jeeps with experienced trackers, typically during early morning or late afternoon when animal activity is at its peak.

Yala is divided into several zones, with Block 1 being the most popular due to its high wildlife concentration. The best time to visit is from February to July, when water levels are lower and animals gather around waterholes, increasing visibility. Yala is ideal for nature lovers, adventure seekers, and luxury travelers, with a range of accommodations from boutique safari lodges to high-end tented camps offering immersive jungle experiences.
